Sri Lanka and Hassad Food Discuss Food Security Cooperation
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar H. E. Sithara Khan, met with Eng. Ali Hilal Al Kuwari, Chief Executive Officer of Hassad Food Company, in Doha on 29 September 2026 to discuss investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. Hassad Food Company serves as Qatar's strategic investment arm in the food and agribusiness sector.
The two sides discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in food security, agriculture, technology transfer and aquaculture, in line with Qatar's National Food Security Strategy. They also explored ways to connect Sri Lankan suppliers, exporters and investors with Qatar's food sector, and agreed to work towards a framework for sustained collaboration.
The Ambassador briefed the CEO on the bilateral Investment Protection Agreement between Sri Lanka and Qatar. The agreement guarantees investors the free repatriation of capital and returns, and provides a secure environment for Qatari investment in Sri Lanka. She also invited Hassad Food to take part in Sri Lanka EXPO 2027, to be held from 14 to 17 January 2027. The EXPO will be a valuable platform for engaging directly with Sri Lankan producers and businesses.
The Ambassador noted that the meeting comes as Sri Lanka and Qatar mark 50 years of diplomatic relations. She reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to deepening economic and trade ties with Qatar. Both sides expressed their willingness to maintain close engagement and to follow up on the areas discussed.
